Aids the Silent Killer - 758 Words

AIDS: The Silent Killer Introduction AIDS is one of the most commonly known sexually transmitted diseases. The last stages of HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, are what we know as AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV is similar to other viruses like the flu or common cold except the human immune system cannot destroy the virus. The virus can hide in the cells of the body for long periods of time and attacks important parts of the immune system like T-cells or CD4 cells. Once HIV destroys a lot of CD4 cells the human body can no longer fight against infections and diseases. AIDS is diagnosed when the body cannot fight against disease and the patient has one or more specific opportunistic infections (OIs), different types of†¦show more content†¦In 1982, scientists discovered that AIDS remains a sexually transmitted disease. Not until 1984 did researchers conclude that AIDS is caused by HIV. 12 Although HIV has become somewhat maintainable, during the early years of the AIDs virus a vaccine seemed i mpossible, and with almost 30 years since the virus first budded its head there is still no vaccine.13 As I said earlier HIV is a virus, specifically a retrovirus. Retroviruses contain RNA for their genetic material, but once someone is infected the virus uses an enzyme called transcriptase to turn RNA into DNA.14 The virus then continues to replicate itself.15 People usually do not realize they have HIV because it is a lentivirus and there is usually a long period of time between the time of infection and the sign of serious symptoms.16 Animals have similar versions of HIV that have made good but not perfect models of how HIV works.17 HIV replicates at impeccable speeds creating billions of new HIV viruses to infect the body every day.18 The virus is able to mutate and evolve which makes it that much harder to defeat the virus.19 The CD4 cells and T cells are destroyed daily by HIV which eventually causes the immune system to regenerate or defeat infections.20 HIV is able to hide i n the cytoplasm of the cell that it infects or makes its way into the cell’s chromosomes.21 The virus does this to hide from the immune system so it will not be destroyed.22 Some drugs have been found toShow MoreRelatedHypertension : A Common Disease893 Words   |  4 PagesHypertension is a common disease that many people have heard about, but many do not understand. The First Reactor Essay Example For Students

The First Reactor Essay The First ReactorThe First Reactor chronicles the conception and implementation of the first self-sustaining nuclear pile. The booklet has three main sections to it. The first one tells of the history and background of the organizations and research that were used for the momentous experiment, as well as the actual proceedings that occurred on December 2, 1942. The second section is basically a brief synopsis of the first. The third section documents part of Enrico Fermis life and the secrecy surrounding his work, from his wifes perspective. Years of research went into the culmination of the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction. Different preliminary experiments were done by many scientists to discover the properties and intricacies of neutron production and interaction. All leading up to the fateful day under the west stands of Stagg Field when the first successful self-sustaining reaction occurred, or as they cleverly say in the booklet, The Italian navigator has landed in the New World. The secrets of the nuclear projects were closely guarded. So close in fact, that not even Enricos own wife was allowed to know. In the section written by her, telling of her bewilderment, we get a sense of how strongly the classified information was kept from the people who didnt need to know. Science

The Formulation of Criminal Justice Policies Essays - Criminal Law

The Formulation of Criminal Justice Policies Student's Name Institution of Affiliation The Formulation of Criminal Justice Policies The criminal justice systems play the critical role of facilitating various government institutions to maintain social control, deter as well as mitigate crime. In effect, it is imperative for the government to ensure that the criminal justice system is functioning effectively. The performance of the criminal justice system is influenced by the standard of policies that are used for the purpose of operating it. In consequence, it is critical for the stakeholders of the criminal justice system to ensure that the administrators of the institution manage to develop top notch policies. A review of the operations of the criminal justice system confirms that the use of statistical data is instrumental to the formulation of world-class criminal justice policies. Currently, a substantive fraction of the residents in the United States are complaining about the criminal justice system because of the fashion in which they have been carrying out their operations. Notably, the critics of the criminal justice system argue that the law enforcement officers have been carrying out extrajudicial killings leading to the formation of civil society movements such as Black Lives Matter. Indeed, the police have made the effort of ensuring that they process most of the cases regarding to extrajudicial killings but the outcomes of such inquiries have been controversial. In effect, the general public has been losing confidence on the credibility of the operations of some of the law enforcement agencies (Sheperdson, Clancey, Lee & Crofts, 2014). Due to this facet, it is essential for the directors of the criminal justice system to utilize the latest set of statistical data to review the incidence of extrajudicial killing across the country. The utilization of statistical data will enable the directors of the criminal justice system to develop an impartial and objective view of the situation. In consequence, the directors of the criminal justice system can develop policies which will minimize the prevalence of extrajudicial killings throughout the country which can boost the confidence of the public on the system. Additionally, the use of statistical data by the stakeholders of the criminal justice systems can enhance their effectiveness at rehabilitating prisoners. The analysis of statistical data can enable the prisons department to determine the most common type of crime in the country. In consequence, the prison department can develop programs that specially address the factors which lead to the execution of such crimes (Silveira & Beato, 2014). By so doing, it is highly likely that the prisons department will reduce the incidence of those types of crimes. The quality of policies which will devised will be influenced by the standard of statistical information utilized by the directors of the criminal justice system. In a nutshell, it is evident that the use of statistical data as a means of supporting the criminal justice policy is critical to improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system. Notably, the use statistical data that is utilized during policy formulation facilitates the stakeholders of the criminal justice system to devise policies which will improve the accountability of public officials. Similarly, the utilization of statistical data will ensure that all the policies which are formulated are relevant to the contemporary social, economic and political environment (Valle, 2010). In effect, the criminal justice policy will enable the various arms of the criminal justice system to enhance their contribution towards upholding social control, sanctioning the individuals who contravene laws with retribution efforts, mitigating as well as deterring crime. Edgar Allan Poe Essays - Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven, Free Essays

Edgar Allan Poe Essays - Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven, Free Essays Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. Orphaned at the age of three, Edgar was sent to a foster home where he lived with the Allans in Richmond, VA until he married his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. Throughout his youth, Edgar experienced rocky relations with the Allans and was eventually disowned before his marriage. (Compton's, pp. 401-02) Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poems induce disturbing emotions which stem from an unstable childhood as a result of a disjointed family life. After leaving his broken foster home, Poe enlisted in the army under the name Edgar A. Perry in 1827. Aspiring to become an officer in hopes to regain favor with Mr. Allan, Poe was granted an honorable discharge and sought an appointment at West Point. (Forrest, P., Who Was Poe?) While waiting for over a year to hear from the school, Poe resided with his widowed aunt, Ms. Maria Clemm in Baltimore. In 1830, Poe was sworn in as a cadet. However, the death of his foster mother led to Mr. Allan's remarriage and Poe's exclusion from the family will. Upon receiving such news, Poe deliberately neglected his classes and was expelled from West Point after only eight months of study. His writing career began soon after when he won a short story contest in 1833 and became a literary critic for The Southern Literary Messenger. Later writing opportunities brought Poe a small income, which paved the way for his marriage to Virginia Clemm in 1835. (Compton's, pp. 401-02) Virginia was half Edgar's age and represented the only sense of family Poe had ever known. When she became ill with tuberculosis in 1843, Poe fell into severe depression marked by bouts of drinking and gambling. His publication of The Raven in 1845 illustrated this unstable mind frame and foreshadowed Virginia's death in 1847. (Compton's, pp. 401-02) It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore- Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore. Quoth the Raven, Nevermore.' (Frazah, Homepage) Likewise, many of his works during this period reflect similarly disturbing emotions brought on by a need to express the rage of past events in his life through his short stories and poems. The erratic subjects and tones of Poe's works encompass not only his despair resulting from Virginia's death but also the angst of being robbed of a loving family in his earlier youth. His relations with Mr. Allan proved to be insincere after Mrs. Allan's death. Poe was left only with the realization that what scraps of a family he held on to for so long were false securities which led him nowhere. He struggled to gain favor with his foster father for years before grasping this concept. His marriage to Virginia Clemm was an effort to restore a sense of lost family which only ended in further despair. Clearly these events created so deep an impact on Poe that his writings reflect a tendency of lonely, desperate, and erratic tones which parallel the nature of his behaviors. Leave my loneliness unbroken!- quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door! Quoth the Raven, Nevermore.' (Frazuh, Homepage) The standard trademark of Poe's writing is that it evokes disturbing images and emotions which instill a sense of loneliness. He has the ability to create a mirror image of himself in every short story and poem. The sadness, which plagued Poe throughout his life, laid the framework for all of his writings. Without such a motivation, Poe may have created equally beautiful works yet they would not have instilled a sense of the life he led so clearly. They leave behind a photographic image of the man he was. Bibliography cant find it

Peruse and Some Alternatives

Peruse and Some Alternatives Peruse and Some Alternatives Peruse and Some Alternatives By Maeve Maddox A reader asked me about the use of the transitive verb peruse: I have a question please. On the National Geographic Facebook page, they wrote Today marks the third Earth-year since NASAs Curiosity rover made its nail-biting descent through Mars thin atmosphere, successfully landing on its dusty surface- and plans for the next mission are in the works. Peruse through this gallery to see stellar snapshots of Curiositys journey to the red planet. Is it supposed to have the through  or should it be peruse only? I promptly answered: â€Å"You are correct. The verb peruse is transitive. It takes an object. The through is redundant.† When I checked the Ngram Viewer to satisfy myself that â€Å"peruse through† would not come up, I was surprised to see that it does register, although barely. I stand by my initial response, that peruse takes an object and is not followed by a preposition. One might â€Å"pore over a book† but one â€Å"peruses a book.† Some controversy exists regarding the meaning of peruse. I’d always understood it to mean, read carefully,† but in researching this post I’ve discovered that it can also mean look over briefly or superficially.† The latter sense is present in the example from the National Geographic website, in which peruse means â€Å"to browse.† Peruse in the sense of â€Å"to examine† entered English from Anglo-Norman French, peruser, in the sense of examining a witness. Peruser does not survive in modern French. English peruse translates into French as â€Å"lire attentivement,† literally, â€Å"to read attentively.† Although still in general use, peruse tends to sound old-fashioned, pompous, or jocular. I dont agree with language critics who insist that peruse must be used only in the sense of â€Å"read carefully† and never to mean â€Å"to read superficially,† but I do suggest that English has plenty of options for either meaning. If you are looking for a word or expression that conveys the idea of careful reading or examination, you may choose from these: read carefully study scrutinize inspect examine pore over wade through On the other hand, if you want to express the idea of superficial reading, you may choose from these options: look through browse leaf through scan run one’s eye over glance through skim thumb through As for peruse, apparently you may use it to convey either idea. Whichever meaning you attach to it, however, don’t follow it with a prepositional phrase. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Short-Term and Long-Term Post-MBA Goals Personal Statement

Short-Term and Long-Term Post-MBA Goals - Personal Statement Example   I set my long term goal to become such a mayor-a leader of change, devoting myself in refocusing a service government which fulfills its responsibilities on economic regulation, market supervision, social management and public welfare based on service. Furthermore, I aspire to bridge my city from landlocked West China to the global stage. To get prepared for such a vision, I set my short-term goal to become a strategist, stepping up to the senior executive assistant after completing my MBA. I will serve as the chief strategic officer in my hometown and a strategic partner to the mayor, creating, communicating, executing, and sustaining the city's strategic initiatives. For me, the strategy is more than forging new city developments, working relationships, and synergies across government functions; it also involves establishing greater transparency and accountability. The Chinese government thirsts for a new generation of government... My step up into government requires further preparation to learn to balance my business philosophy with my government mission. In this regard, Columbia Business School serves as the best venue to achieve both as it offers holistic education. I admire the educational institution's innovative approach to learning because I believe that the latter should evolve in order to accommodate the emerging needs of students and the international business arena. By becoming a venue for active learning, entrepreneurial training, and bridging research and practice, I believe that Columbia Business School will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills which will enable me to attain both my short term and long term goals. Emergency assignment for the subject Supply Chain Management. Writer Essay

Emergency assignment for the subject Supply Chain Management. Writer MUST be ON TIME. Writer also needs to send me references files which you used. Writer nee - Essay Example Some of the books will be Supply Chain Management: In theory and Practice, by Birgit Dam Jespersen and Tage Skjtt-Larsen, as well as another book called Supply Chain Management: Concepts and Cases, by Rahul V Altekar. While the first book discusses the basics that form the conception of supply chain management, the second book discusses various cases that help demonstrate the elements of this concept in a better way. Further, the journal articles will focus on the work produced by the Supply Chain Management Professionals, so as to gain an insight into this area of operational significance in the organisation. These journal articles will include Coordinated Supply Chain Management by D. J Thomas and P. M Griffin, for the European Journal of Operational Research. Apart from such articles, there will be a strong focus on Internet sources like www.bettermanagement.com which describes various strategies as well as business policies that support systems like supply chain management and knowledge management. Texan Foods is a company founded and based in Texas, near Amarillo. Born in the year 1941, this company has grown from strength to strength to consolidate its standing as one of the best gourmet chain which specialises in grocery products. Their line of products includes croissants, English muffins as well as exotic sandwich breads, buns and other baked goods like tortillas. Besides being a household name by the mid 90s with ample support from a former oil businessman, R.L (Buddy) Howlett, who was its founder and a successful entrepreneur, this company had come to employ a major supplier who went by name of Valley. (Autry, 2005)2 As a big manufacturing company, it has been demonstrated that Texan has a very poor system of supply chain management as far as its model of collaboration, planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR), is concerned. To start with, let us describe the exact nuances of supply chain management, in context of the CPFR model. Supply chain management (SCM) may be defined as that sphere of activities that takes place in context of planning, implementing, and controlling the operations. These operations or activities, in turn, are connected with the management of the supply chain so as to effectively cater to the requirements of the customer and gain complete satisfaction of the same through a focus on optimum ulisation of resources. (Atlekar, 2005)3 In this regard, supply chain management deals with all activities pertaining to the mobilisation, storage as well as an account of the semi finished and finished products that are of value to the end user. (Hugos, 2005)4 In this context, various scholars have also refered to this form and area of management as logistics as it connects the quantitative areas of assessment with the qualitative goal achievement progress of the organisation. These areas have been assessed in Texan, through inputs from two officials who are connected with the operational realities of the supply chain management system followed at Texan. Chapter 1.2: Problem Areas In this regard, Texan

The First Essay Example for Free

The First Essay In the first part of this lab, E. coli cells were transformed with an R-plasmid carrying a tetracycline resistant gene, giving rise to tetracycline resistant E. coli strain. This was accomplished through transformation, which allowed E. coli to directly uptake the naked DNA molecule carrying the antibiotic resistant gene (1). However, in order to take up the DNA and incorporate them into their genome via recombination, cells must be competent (1). Therefore, E. coli cells which are not competent under normal conditions were treated with cold and high concentration of CaCl2, in order to make them artificially competent (1). The transformants were grown on the LB with the tetracycline antibiotic, and on the LB without the tetracycline. Then the viable competent cells and the viable cells were counted to calculate the frequency of transformation. In the second part of the lab, lateral gene transfer by generalized transduction was done on E. coli cells. In the process of transduction, the transfer of genes is facilitated by bacteriophage, which is a virus that infects a bacterial host (1). Generalized transduction involves lytic infections that kill the bacterial cells, and during the process, bacterial DNA is packaged into a new phage head which in turn injects the DNA into another bacterium (1). In this lab, P1vir phage was used and grown on the donor strain by making a phage lysate. P1vir phage kills bacterial cells by lytic infections, which is required in the generalized transduction (1). On the other hand, the wild-type p1 is a lysogenic phage and therefore could not be used for the generalized transduction (1). In order to prevent excessive killing of the recipient E. oli strain, the P1vir lysate was tittered by serial dilutions. This would also prevent infection and lysis of the transducing particle. In generalized transduction, trp-pyrF region of CSH61 chromosome, which was the P1vir lysate, was laterally transferred to the recipient CSH54 strain. The genotypes of transductants were tested by patching them onto a Petrie plate lacking tryptophan and uracil, whi ch will allow growth of trp+, pyrF+, and not the trp+,pyrF- transductants. Trp gene encodes for trypsin, while the pyrF gene encodes for pyramidines, such as uracil. Thi, his, and pro genes encode for thiamine, histidine, and proline respeictively (1). Finally, the frequency of transductant was used to obtain the distance between the trp and pyrF gene. Discussion In the transformation experiment, E. coli cells were transformed with Plasmid DNA containing the tetracycline resistant gene, and were tested for competency by growing them in LB in presence of tetracycline antibiotic. Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that works by inhibiting translation, thus inhibiting protein synthesis. It attaches to the 30S subunit of ribosome and prevents the charged aminoacyl-tRNA from binding (3). As shown on Table 1, Tube 3 and Tube 2 did not have any growth of E. coli cells. Tube 2 contained E. coli cells only, and when cultured on the LB plate in presence of tetracycline antibiotic, the growth was inhibited by the antibiotic. Because the E. coli cells in tube 2 lacked the tetracycline resistant gene contained in the plasmid DNA, it was unable to grow in the presence of tetracycline antibiotic. Tube 3, lacked the E. coli cells and so, there were no cells to grow in the LB plate with or without the tetracycline. Tube 3 instead was used as a control, to test for contamination in the plasmid DNA and the calcium chloride. In tube 1, which contained the E. coli cells and the plasmid DNA containing the tetracycline resistant gene, transformation occurred. As a result, E. coli cells have acquired the tetracycline resistant gene, being able to grow on the LB plate in the presence of the tetracycline antibiotic. Therefore the viable competent cells were counted from tube 1 contents in 102 diluted LB (with antibiotic), which had cells between 30 and 300 colonies. On the other hand, the total viable cells were counted from tube 1 in 106 diluted plate that was grown on LB without the antibiotic. As shown on table. 2, the viable competent cells were calculated to be 24350 cells/100ul and the total viable cells were found to be 370,500,000 cells/100ul. Finally, the transformation frequency, which is the ratio of transformants per viable cell, was calculated and was found to be 6. 49 x 10-05 as shown on table 2. In the generalized transduction experiment, trp gene from the donor strain of CSH61 (P1vir lysate) was laterally transferred to the recipient strain, CSH54. CSH61 strain are trp+, pyrF+ and the CSH54 strain are trp-, pyrF-, and because trp and pyrF are linked together on the same chromosomal fragment, they are cotransduced (1). The transductants were identified by selecting for the trp+ marker by growing in absence of tryptophan, however the pyrF marker may be present or absent, depending on the crossover event during recombination. This was identified by patching the transductants onto a Petrie plate lacking tryptophan and uracil. The trp+, pyrF+ transductants will be able to synthesize both tryptophan and uracil, and therefore will grow in this minimal medium (1). However, trp+, pyrF- transductants cannot grow in the medium, because they won’t be able to synthesize uracil (1). As shown on table 3, 57. 5% of transductants were trp+, pyrF+ while 42. 5% were trp+, pyrF-. This means trp is cotransduced with pyrF at 57. 5% frequency, which indicates that they are very closely linked. Markers which are separated by less than 0. 5 minutes are cotransduced at 35-95%, and so, trp which cotransduced with pyrF at 57. 5%, is very closely linked (1). This closely matches the actual cotransduction frequency of 55% between trp and pyrF in E. oli (2). According to the Wu formula, the cotransduction frequency of 57. 5% yielded distance of 0. 084 minutes, which was very close to the distance of 0. 09 minutes at cotransduction frequency of 55% found in literature (2). Bacterial genes can also be analyzed by a method known as Southern blotting (4). In this method, DNA is treated with restriction enzymes, which cuts the DNA into fragments of different size. Then the fragments are run on an agarose gel by electrophoresis, which separates the fragments by size.

The Indian Triumph of Dionysus Essay -- Art Analysis

While visiting the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, I came across The Indian Triumph of Dionysus. Originating in Rome, it was created by a wealthy follower of Dionysus’s mystery cult in the late second century A.D. This worshiper evidently wanted to construct a sarcophagus in tribute of Dionysus’s accomplishments. Furthermore, Dionysus is surrounded by characters that are within the mystery cult because the creator wants the viewers to know with whom he is associated. With these two things combined, the patron hoped to shed light on a piece of history that they believed to be prominent during his life. The layout of the museum makes it very easy to find works of art from different time periods. Since I have always been fascinated with ancient Greece and Rome, I knew exactly where to start my search. The Indian Triumph of Dionysus is on display directly at the top of the staircase leading up to the second floor. It is surrounded by many other artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome. As your eyes move across the room, catching a glint of gold here and pearly white marble there, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed for a moment. As I reached the top of the stairs, it was evident that the staging of this magnificent piece was carefully planned. The staff of the museum undoubtedly wants this piece seen by each and every visitor. The exhibit itself is well done. If you stand directly in front of The Indian Triumph of Dionysus, everything around you seems to fade away and tunnel vision sets in. As I stood in front of The Indian Triumph of Dionysus, diligently taking notes since phot os are not allowed, I experienced an extreme spiritual connection to the past. I tried to put myself into the shoes of the author. What was his purpose? What d... ...t is also important to notice that every character seems to have wide eyes and dark circles drawn under their eyes. This is perhaps one of the most important aspects because the eyes show the underlying theme of complete inebriation. This in turn, proves the impact that Dionysus had on his followers as well as those who he conquered. Wine brought great power to its creator, and made a lasting impact on history. With these devices of communication, we are able to see that the follower wanted to capture Dionysus’s legacy by creating a sarcophagus of remembrance in his honor. BofA Mobile Banking case Essay

Introduction Bank of America (BofA) is the largest bank holding company in the United States, by assets, and the second largest bank by market capitalization. As a global Finance Service Institution, BofA serves clients in more than 150 countries and has a relationship with 99% of the U.S. The bank’s 2008 acquisition of Merrill Lynch made Bank of America the world’s largest wealth manager and a major player in the investment banking industry. BofA launched mobile banking in May 2007. Mobile Banking lets customers easily and securely access balance information, pay bills with optional Bill Pay service, transfer funds, and find nearby ATMs and banking centers through a mobile application on their smartphones, and through mobile web on their phone browser. Douglas, SVP of Mobile Product Development was quoted, â€Å"In less than 3 years we have four million mobile banking customers. That’s an adoption rate almost five to eight times that of our online banking several years ago.† Line-of-business managers are looking for leveraged mobile platforms with functionalities that can meet different needs and the different target groups such as: Merrill Lynch brokerage, mortgages, credit cards, consumer payments, etc†¦ The capabilities of mobile banking through the use of smartphones or mobile web have become popular with today’s bank customers. There are increasing overall growth in mobile banking in the financial services industry. In addition, the transaction cost1 of mobile banking and internet banking is much lower than the traditional channel (e.g. Branch, Call Center, ATMS and IVR). Due to the economic downturn, banks are looking for extend the service channels and aim to increase the profit via tradition core banking service, such as transaction fees. The system automation can reduce the operation cost; increase the transaction turnaround time and accuracy. With the popularity of smartphones and mobile data services, mobile banking can be the booming tools for banking industry profit engine. However, investing in the enhancement of the mobile banking is costly and will directly affecting the bank’s revenue and brand images. The worse scenarios, may encounter customer complain and regulatory comments and punishments. Therefore, the management of BofA have to decide how can they effectively utilize this technology as a new media to make banking services easier, faster and more convenient for customer, at the same time, how can the app can help for BofA marketing the banks new products, service and increase the customer loyalty. In the short run, what do BofA tell the line-of-business managers – should the app increase functionality, build new app or refuses to add complexity to the current app? In the long run, how do BofA position the bank in this fast changing industry? Analysis Mobile banking (app) is not a mandatory product (or say channel) for bank’s customer. It’s just an optional channel, based on the product itself, let’s analysis base on Porter’s 5 forces analysis. 1. New entrants are HIGH. There will not be any new large mass-market players or niche players bursting on the scene, but there will be new independent players like PayPal that will provide some similar functions app in the market. 2. Power of suppliers are from MEDIUM to LOW. The majority of the suppliers of mobile banking should be those technologies partners, technology consultants, outsource software house and marketing partners as alliance in some promotion campaigns. Bank has stronger power than those outsource software house in most situations. 3. Bargaining power of buyers is HIGH. Given the mobile banking is only an optional channel for customer. Customers still have other options to complete their transaction thru the bank and able to say NO to mobile banking. The switching cost of changing the channel is low but the switching cost of BANK may from LOW to MEDIUM. 4. Threat of substitution is HIGH. Currently customers still can utilize other channels to fulfill their needs via Branches, Call Center, ATMS, Internet banking and IVR. 5. Intensity of rivalry is HIGH. Many banks like Well Fargo, Citibank, JP Morgan are working on the mobile banking and each of these app have the same majority functions and include some differentiate functions. BofA Mobile Banking App functionalities To install the app and apply the mobile banking is free. As the mobile banking include 3 major segments of core function: Mobile Website, Text Banking and Mobile App2 . The BofA’s new app include below functions: †¢Check account balances for accounts and facilities lines held with BofA. †¢Pay bills. †¢Transfer funds between BofA accounts. †¢View transaction details for all BofA accounts or facilities lines, including posted, pending and scheduled transactions. BofA Mobile Banking App include the majority functions that customer requires and let’s talk about the Brand of BofA in the following section. The Brand of BofA & Competitors Bank of America ($30.6B) is the most valuable banking brand in the USA. Its brand value has increased by 18% and it has a brand rating of AAA-. Despite concerns of further mortgage-related write-downs, Bank of America was also the #1 most valuable banking brand in the world at 2011. The Designs The Bank and the Mobile Banking App Logo Given the icon of BofA can be shown in the Bank and the mobile banking logo, it can help the customers to connect the mobile banking app to BofA. The color use of the Bank is Red and Blue and the Mobile banking is single using Red only. Red color is a powerful color, symbolizing energy, passion or even danger. It works best for action-oriented products or brands, products associated with speed or power, or dominant or iconic brands. The mobile banking icon didn’t use the Red and Blue color which only using Red to show the passion and commitment of the bank to customer via mobile banking. Bank of America and Mobile Banking Slogans Bank Bank of America. Higher Standards Embracing ingenuity Think what we can do for you Mobile Banking Life is mobile, so is your bank The Slogan of Mobile Banking can directly identify the availability and accessibility of the apps that can provide the mobility banking services everywhere. However, it can’t strongly connect to the Bank’s core Slogans. Recommendations Given the increment of additional functions will slow down the performance of the mobile banking app; it does not recommend incorporating the additional business functions to the current app. From technologies risk and regulatory prospective, it will be too risky if pulling all business applications in one single platform. If on module down, it will totally affect the bank normal day to day operations. In short run, suggest developing new apps for extending the advance mortgages, credit cards service or investments service for different business functions. To leverage different branding to differentiate the different category of services that offered. Apart from leverage different brands3 own by the group, BofA can also cooperate with Smartphone and Telecom Services Providers to ingredient branding to provide the end to end mobile service. Bank customer can encounter discount on purchase latest smartphones, discount on data service plan and possible to issue mobile credit cards by offering promotions. BofA can consider consolidating all apps in one single platform when there are needs in future. In long run, BofA can cooperate with the Telecom Services Providers and sizeable Merchants, to provide addition information for customer when customer arriving the merchants and let them know what kinds of promotions or discounts are offer. This can uplift the service from singling banking service to mobile living yellow pages. This can help to increase the customer loyalty and build strong connections with bank customers. It can also attract more alliance (other merchants) to share the promotion and marketing cost to developing a new banking and living experience. Of cause, it is necessary to maintain the balance of utilizing the mobile banking app, customers segments for marketing promotion events, if over sell which may obtain opposite result. To differentiate BofA from other competitors, it is necessary to ensure the Bank can position the Bank with Stronger Branding and Images extend the services from â€Å"Banking† only to diversify the service to other related informational services in daily life and provide incredible services and experience for customers. This can help the bank to reposition the bank as a full around bank which can fulfill customer day to day activities that require of any payment or transactions. This can help to identify stronger alliance for the long term development. In conclusion, BofA must keep on investing in mobile banking apps, as it is a trend that smartphone or more innovative device (e.g. Google device) will become more popular, bank must utilize these new technologies by re-design the current channels to increase the bank traditional income (e.g. Transaction fees) and other new incomes (e.g. investments service, financial consultation service, etc.) and extend the service with alliance to promoting the daily service tools. This can help the bank to enlarge the customer groups, define new customer groups segments or sub-segments for better marketing and promotion campaigns and maintain the brand in the leading positions. Exhibit 1 Costs per Transaction by different channels The Pricing, when the apps developed to more advance, and able to customize and fully integrate full around service for customer, at that time, BofA can consider of charging customer for service charges after trial. If customers are satisfying with the full around services after the trial, the bank can also extend the income by promotion the comprehensive mobile banking and service apps. Exhibit 2 Mobile website Customers can pay bills whenever they want with optional online Bill Pay. Check balances on checking accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. After the Dance

Writing Topic: What point does Leo Tolstoy’s story â€Å"After the Dance† (pgs. 71-75) make about Russian society? What moments or details in the story help to convey this point? Explain in a carefully written essay, supporting your argument with evidence from the text. Tolstoy’s â€Å"After the Dance† is essentially a representation of Russian history and the exposition of a dark side to the seemingly regal atmosphere of the Russian aristocracy first introduced at the ball.Using literary elements such as symbolism and foreshadowing to reveal a hidden meaning, Tolstoy tells the story of Ivan Vasilievich’s first impression of the beautiful Varinka and how this impression changes after watching her father cruelly beat a Tartar for attempting to desert. Varinka is the first character we meet in Ivan’s flashback. Described as â€Å"stately† and an object of much admiration, she entrances Ivan, who dances with her for majority of the ball. After being promised a quadrille dance after supper, Ivan watches her dance with her father, the Colonel.Varinka is almost always associated with her father after being introduced, providing an unquestionable link between the two. Ivan’s first observation of the Colonel was that he was â€Å"that ultra-military type produced by the discipline of Emperor Nicolas I. † The Colonel’s first words, â€Å"Everything must be done according to rule,† also provides valuable insight as to what kind of person he is. He is introduced to the reader as an affable, aging man enjoying the ball with his daughter, Varinka.Upon watching him dance with her, Ivan feels â€Å"a sort of tenderness for him that was almost rapture,† which is a misled impression. Later on, he sees the procession in which a Tartar is being punished for attempting to desert. Not only does the Colonel walk beside the Tartar as he is receiving his punishment, but he also demands that the soldier strike him harder with the whip. In seeing this, Ivan’s whole view of him is changed from the friendly old man that offered to let him dance with his daughter into a cruel and unforgiving man that called for harsher punishment even when the Tartar was obviously already suffering.Varinka represents the envisioned goodness the Russian government uses to appeal to and garner support from the people. The object that initially seems to show the benefits of following the regime is really a cover for the militaristic way the government runs Russia. The same suede-gloved hand that held Varinka’s hand dancing the mazurka was the hand that struck the soldier for not whipping the Tartar to his satisfaction. They belonged to the Colonel, whose character is ultimately revealed to be militaristic and uncaring. With this event, Ivan also ties the Colonel and Varinka together. However, instead of being united through dancing, they are linked through the paternalism, power, and brutali ty of the Colonel. Ivan’s love for Varinka then began to wane and whenever he saw her, he would feel â€Å"awkward and uncomfortable†, leading him to see her less frequently, and eventually not at all. After beholding this public whipping, Ivan’s repulsion for the aristocratic attitude awakens and he rejects both the woman he loves, Varinka, and military service in Russia. In a similar manner, the harshness of the Russian government is shown to its citizens after the initial appeal.

Educational Opportunities in the Everyday

Educational Opportunities in the Everyday Learning opportunities surround us every day, but we may miss them because the tasks seem so mundane. As you go about your daily activities, look for opportunities to capitalize on the educational moments in your everyday life. Grocery Shopping   It’s become something of a humorous homeschool stereotype that homeschooling families can turn a trip to the grocery store into a field trip, but the fact is there are many educational opportunities your kids can experience in the grocery store. You can: Learn to read a scale by weighing producePractice estimation and rounding by keeping a mental tally of the amount you’re spendingDiscuss a variety of measurements such as bushel, pounds, gallons, and pints.Practice percentages by figuring sale pricesLearn how to do comparison shopping using unit pricesDiscuss healthy eating habits Used Car Shopping The experience of purchasing a pre-owned car, while a  bit outside the ordinary, is an excellent opportunity for  real-life training skills. Some of the skills you can work on include: Learning what to look for in a used car, such as dependable reputation, safety, gas mileage, and vehicle historyHow to comparison shop and use tools such as Consumer Reports and Kelley Blue Book to gauge value and dependabilityHow interest rates and the age of the car affect the price - for example, we were better off purchasing a newer car through our credit union at just over 2% interest. Cars older than 10 years only qualified for a signature loan and those rates were 10% and higher. How to figure taxes on automobilesConsidering the cost of insurance when purchasing a car  - newer cars and sports cars will mean higher monthly premiumsLearning what’s involved in registering and titling a car Doctor and Dental Appointments If you’ve got to take time out of your busy schedule for appointments, you might as well make them educational. You might learn about: Preventative measures for disease controlProper oral and personal hygieneWhy doctors check your blood pressure and how it affects your overall healthHow dentists screen for diseases like oral cancerWhat causes cavities, illness, or infectionWhat is involved in becoming a doctor, dentist, nurse, or dental hygienist Ask questions  - especially if you’re at the dentist; it will give your dental hygienist something to talk about, rather than asking you questions that you can’t answer because her hands are in your mouth. Cooking Home ec is one subject that you never really have to go out of your way to teach. You may just need to be a bit more intentional about bringing your kids into the kitchen with you to help you prepare meals. As you do so, talk with them about: Food prep and safetyMeasurements such as cups, teaspoons, and tablespoons, along with common conversions for increasing or decreasing the number of servings in a recipeFollowing directions on a recipeHow to properly use cooking utensilsVarious cooking techniques such as baking, broiling, sautà ©ing and simmering You might want to include some specific recipes as you teach your kids about food, such as biscuits, cookies, a few family favorite main dishes and sides, and some desserts, but all of this can be accomplished in the regular day-to-day of your life. Random Educational Moments Don’t miss the random educational opportunities all around you. Look for opportunities to use daily activities that we may take for granted to put to practical use the abstract concepts your kids are learning in school. For example, say youve been getting price quotes to have a concrete pad poured (so youll have a place to park that used car you bought). Youll be able to talk about area and perimeter in concrete terms (pun intended!). You can also use real-world math to figure up how many bags of concrete needed and what the cost would be to do yourselves, along with comparing the cost, in both time and money, to hire someone to do the job. Use sales and dinners out (tipping your server)  to teach your kids simple ways to  quickly calculate  percentages in their heads. Ask your young children to choose a color and count all the cars of that color that they see as you’re driving down the road. Encourage your older kids to tally the variety of colors they see and create a graph to see which color is more popular. Learning opportunities are all around us if we just look for moments to capitalize on the educational in the everyday.

How to Use LinkedIn Effectively Communications Networking

How to Use LinkedIn Effectively Communications Networking We all know that being a LinkedIn member without actively using the platform is like being a gym member and sitting on the couch all day. LinkedIn is all about communications and networking- and since my latest updates, many things have changed in that arena. Not just the obvious changes like the renaming of the Summary section to â€Å"About† – but also some less prominent ones that you might not have noticed. Here’s a breakdown on how to use LinkedIn effectively, utilizing its new features for communications and networking success. How to Share Information Easily with LinkedIn Mail’s Voice Messaging, Availability Location Features Here’s a tip on how to use LinkedIn effectively with the new Voice Messaging feature, available in the mobile app. This tool can be a very useful way to make sure the intention of your message is understood, avoiding the potential miscommunications of written communications. The voice messaging feature does have its downsides. One author makes a good point stating, â€Å"When someone sees a voice message, there’s no way to discern the content. They have no idea what they’re about to listen to†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Therefore, connections who don’t know you might not take the time to listen to your voice message. Then again, curiosity is a strong force. It might be a good idea to preface your voice message with a written message just to be safe. To use the voice message feature, click on the Messaging icon in the top right. Click the plus icon to begin composing a message, then select the microphone icon at the bottom of your message window. Hold down the microphone/record button while speaking. Then hit Send or Cancel. Unfortunately, previewing your recording is not currently an option, so make sure you feel confident with your message before hitting send.. To learn more, read LinkedIn’s blog article about voice messaging. How to Schedule a Meeting with the Calendar and Location Features (Mobile Only) With LinkedIn’s calendar feature, available on the mobile app, you can suggest some available times to meet a new or existing connection. To do so, start a new message and click the plus sign to view all of your mobile messaging features. Click on â€Å"Availability.† Select a few time slots from your calendar that work for you, then click the checkbox in the upper right: LinkedIn will pull your information into the body of the message. Personalize and send! You can use the Location feature to let your connection know where you are or would like to meet in the future. Just click on the map icon, type in your desired location, and click the blue arrow to send a map. Note that maps are sent immediately – there’s no ability to add text to your message – so be sure to precede your map with a message explaining that the meeting location is on its way. How to Share Documents or Photos and Videos with Tags and Stickers Document Sharing in Updates LinkedIn recently added the ability to share documents as part of a post. You can now upload files from your desktop, Dropbox or OneDrive up to 100MB (but less than 300 pages) in PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX or PDF formats. Anyone who would like to access the document will be able to download your file as a PDF only. This feature is not available for mobile. For more about this feature and LinkedIn’s document best practices, see Sharing Documents on LinkedIn. Photos and Video Sharing If a LinkedIn connection appears in your photo or video, tag them! After selecting your image, click on the member you want to identify and a search field will appear. Begin typing the name of your connection, then click their profile to tag them. Tagged connections will be notified of your post and also have the ability to remove the tag if they wish. There is some concern that spammers will use tagging to harass LinkedIn users. Only time will tell. With LinkedIn’s mobile app, you can also add text and stickers to your videos and images. There doesn’t currently seem to be a way to search the available stickers, so you’ll need to scroll through them to find one you like. Perhaps LinkedIn will improve that functionality in the future, as well as increase the limited number of options available. How to Upgrade Your Interactions with Reactions  Ã‚ Ã‚ Reactions  Ã‚ Ã‚ In a previous article on how to use LinkedIn effectively, I covered how to upgrade your LinkedIn interactions with Emojis and GIFs. Now LinkedIn has provided another option for your communications: Reactions. LinkedIn’s Reactions function much like the features on Facebook, where members can not only like a post, but also love it, celebrate it, tag it as insightful or express their curiosity. If these new reaction images are not enough, you can include your own images with your comments to really stand out. You can share an event photo, a screenshot of an article with relevant content highlighted, infographics, and more. An image can draw more attention to your comment, so go for it! Click on the camera icon and attach any photo from your files. Note that you can’t post an image only; you must also leave a written comment. How to Recommend a Group Post Here’s a tip on how to use LinkedIn effectively as a group owner: You can now recommend important posts to members. Recommended posts will appear in group members’ home page feed so your group stays top of mind. To recommend a post as a group owner, click the three dots in the upper right corner and select â€Å"Recommend this post†: If you’re someone who writes articles and has been wondering whether it will ever be valuable to post them to groups, now you have an answer. Write good ones and perhaps the group owner will recommend your posts. As Josh Turner, WSJ author and founder/CEO of LinkedIn Selling, points out, â€Å"Familiarity begets trust. The more group members see your name, the better. Now that your recommended posts show up in LinkedIn’s main feed, members will be more aware of what’s happening in the group, and hopefully will visit and participate more often.† How to Stay in Touch with Your Coworkers The Teammates Feature is another possibility of how to use LinkedIn effectively. While it hasn’t been rolled out to all members yet, it will be soon. With this tool, you can add coworkers to your network as teammates. Then your teammates’ LinkedIn activity, such as posts, comments, likes, shares and work anniversaries will be prioritized in your feed so you can engage with them. To see if this feature is available to you, click on the My Network tab and look on your left sidebar: Click on â€Å"Teammates† to add coworkers. You can add a manager, teammates reporting to your manager, and direct reports. If you’re not already connected with a teammate, look for the â€Å"Connect† button next to their name. Once connected, you’ll be able to add notes for each teammate, as well as designate them as part of a current or past team. For information on the Teammates feature for mobile, read LinkedIn’s Help article, Using the Teammates Feature. What’s Been Discontinued The following features have quietly disappeared. Not sure what these are? Well, now you don’t have to worry about them! LinkedIn Lookup Request an Introduction Conversation Starters Analytics for regular status updates (only analytics for Publisher articles) Email notifications for activity within your network Group activity notifications (Group post â€Å"Recommendations† have been added) Group announcements Group job conversations LinkedIn Pulse Sharing Bookmarklet Old LinkedIn badges LinkedIn is constantly introducing what they consider improvements. Sometimes they stick; sometimes they don’t. I do my best to keep on top of all of the new options for how to use LinkedIn effectively, including updating my book each year to reflect the current state of affairs. If you want all my LinkedIn tips in one place, please click here to get your copy of the most recent edition of How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile. And I’m always open to hearing about things you’ve noticed that maybe I missed. Please comment below with any questions or suggestions!

Induvidual 3 ENG Litrature Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Induvidual 3 ENG Litrature - Essay Example They wore a lot of make-up, thin bright dresses, tilted slippers fancifully strapped. They looked conspicuous cheap and charming, so much so tht they attracted a lot of attention from the young men around. Their conversation could be considered ordinary and foolish, but typically that of working girls who lived at home with her family and paid half of their salary to its support. It cannot be denied, however, that both had a strong sense of the imaginative as proven by their game of inheriting a million dollars. Like children they were not above having tiffs at the slightest provocation, but making up a little later as though nothing happened. This â€Å"game† was cooked up by Annabel which was no more than the ancient sport of what-would-you-do-if-you-had-a-million-dollars? One must suppose that someone dies and leaves you a million dollars. A condition in the bequest is that the heiress must spend every nickel of the money on herself. This game tells us that both girls long for a change in their socio-economic status. They desire to be wealthy enough to buy clothes worn by wealthy people and accompanying adornments such as pearl necklaces. They were both of the belief that it can’t hurt anyone for after all, it was just a game. Parker was well known for her sharp tongue and malicious wit. This definitely shows in the style of her story. Consider her description of the food the girls ate on weekends, they lunched on sugar, starches, oils and butter-fats. Usually they ate sandwiches of spongy new white bread greased with butter and mayonnaise. They ate thick wedges of cake lying wet beneath ice cream and whipped cream and melted chocolate gritty with nuts. As alternates, they ate patties, sweating beads of infereior ol, containing bits of bland meat bogged in pale, stiffening sauce, etc.† Parker’s witty description of fatty foods

The Role of Integrity in Criminal Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Role of Integrity in Criminal Justice - Essay Example Most people will never be involved directly or indirectly with district attorneys, judges or probation officers. Police officers are therefore the â€Å"face† of the criminal justice system for most people. Integrity in their actions is necessary so that the credibility of the criminal justice system in America can be maintained (Klockars, 2006). Corruption, cronyism and a lack of integrity plague police forces around the world. In some countries, the last person you want to interact with is a police officer because any interaction will include threats of imprisonment or the solicitation of bribes. Police officers are charged to do the right thing according to duty. Everyone working in a professional capacity within the criminal justice system needs to uphold their duty in an ethical manner, but police officers have a special responsibility to do this. The enforcement of laws needs to happen in a manner that is fair and unbiased. Any lapse in integrity makes this impossible. A breach in integrity creates an inherently unjust situation. Police officers are often forced to make difficult decisions. Acting with integrity is a sure guide when the time comes for making hard choices. A lack of integrity for a police officer can be manifest in many ways. One way is through a biased application or enforcement of the law. Holding different groups within the community more accountable for breaking laws than other groups is unethical and lacks integrity. These divisions can be made along the lines of race, gender, sexual orientation, income level and age. Police officers need to keep in mind that proper enforcement of the law can not be dictated by membership in a certain group. When laws are enforced this way, integrity is lacking. Another profound breach of integrity police officers may be involved in is through the taking of bribes or hush money. While this is the norm in some

Setting out the athletics running track and marathon route together Essay

Setting out the athletics running track and marathon route together with measurement of the field events suitable for international competition - Essay Example A running following is assembled around the "standard line" – a hypothetical line that is placed 20cm from the inward path in every path going in the running bearing. The 400-meter length for a track oval is focused around the measuring line. Right slant, angularity and smoothness are fundamental for legitimate running track development. A track must comply with a high set of tolerances, for example, 1/10% greatest descending slant in the running heading. Anything is surpassing the most extreme permissible incline wont permit players to break records on the track. Building games offices is carried out utilizing unrivaled science as part of the request to dependably have legitimate slant, angularity and smoothness with the goal that competitors can perform their best. Security is a necessity which is divulged by building and introducing laser-controlled exactness surfaces that adjust to the largest amounts of tolerance, minimizing hard, delicate and uneven ranges. Precise tolerances are obliged to be qualified for setting sports records. Best tolerances are given to meet the tightest prerequisites in the business. As most general foremen are value persuaded and contract organizations that are sufficiently "great," they are not ready to convey this level of accuracy; most games offices are not fabricated to the insignificant tolerances holders ought to anticipate. Utilization of various bits of state-of-the-workmanship laser-controlled supplies – including numerous laser sorts is utilized to accomplish the most abnormal amount of exactness and tolerance in the business and specialty of running track and marathon development. Persistently, an examination is executed focused around the best innovation, gear, and philosophies. The predominating laser accuracy conveys close flawless evaluating and waste, expanding the execution, life span, and security of the games office. Without uniform

Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement On Consumer Purchase Intention Marketing Essay

Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement On Consumer Purchase Intention Marketing Essay Celebrity endorsement has become a modern day staple of advertisement strategies, used to create distinctive competencies in increasingly competitive industries. This is especially the case with the telecom sector of Pakistan, which is one of the countrys most profitable industries and thus the level of competition is fierce and companies often resort to celebrity endorsement to impact consumer purchase intention. This research study aims to study the nature of the relationship between celebrity endorsement variables and purchase intention. The use of previous studies in this field has created a common set of variables that combine to form the celebrity endorsement factor and as such these variables have been extracted from the literature review. The identified variables are: image-fit, brand recognition, likeability, trustworthiness and attractiveness. The research primarily used a quantitative method for analysis as the author wanted the results to be less subject to the authors own intuition and thus his own bias. This analysis was obtained from questionnaires and formed the basis of the data used to regress the variables with each other. Overall, the regression and cross tabulation results concluded that all five variables had a significant impact on purchase intention with brand recognition and trustworthiness being given the highest value by consumers in terms of affecting their purchase intention. Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to all those who helped me during the whole of my project. I gratefully acknowledge the help of my supervisor, Professor Fareedy who has offered me invaluable advice throughout the project. He has spent time and energy to aid in the completion of this project and none of this would have been possible without his patient instructions, insightful criticisms and expert guidance. I would also acknowledge the enormous support and advice received from my dear friend, Ammar Hameed, without whom this thesis would not have been of the quality that it is now. Table of Contents Chapter I: Overview Introduction Advertisement plays a vital role in the economy; it is the foundation upon which this fast paced world learns whats new and available. To sell a product in the competitive global market has become a challenging task. Homogenous products and brands make it difficult to choose from. Minor tweaks in design and voila a new product is ready for the shelves. However advertisement is major difference between the brands and their products and services. In order to survive in this trade, companies require sales to increase which would establish a label for the company seemingly creates a sense of belonging between the consumer and the product. This sense of belonging is awakened in the hearts of the purchasers by going along with celebrity endorsements where consumers can relate to their favorite celebrity that leads on to influencing demand for that brands product or service. When relating to celebrities, it is vital that companies choose celebrities who are up in the popular rating hence strengthening the scope of accomplishment in gaining market share for the particular brand, product or a service. It can be said that the popularity and the association of the celebrity with the brand has a direct relationship. As the popularity level goes up, so does the image of the brand in question. The basic idea of the endorsement is quite simple. General consensus is that people like celebrities, if those celebrities say that they like a product or a service naturally people will like what they like. It is as if by magic celebrities transfer their popularity from themselves to the products. Endorsement also might symbolize quality or any other related virtue. In order to sell a product we need to advertise and what could be better than to advertise on the shoulders of already successful sales i.e. celebrities. It is thus that this research project seeks to understand the how celebrities, and specifically their attributes affect, both positively and negatively, the purchase intention of the consumers and hence the title: Impact of celebrity endorsers attributes on consumer purchase intention Background The history of celebrity endorsement of products dates back to the 1760s. Josiah Wedgwood, the founder of the Wedgwood brand of pottery and chinaware, also called the father of the modern brand ; he used royal endorsements with regard to his brand to create a sense of aura and position the brand in such a way as to exceed its value in comparison to the value created by the product and services offered. The cigarette industry signed on entertainment personalities and used them in its ads in 1905. Since radio became commercial in the late 20s and the invention of TV screens in the 40s, celebrities have done commercials. Western culture has always flocked to the notion of a celebrity driven culture; whereby celebrities dictate the trends of the post-modern materialistic culture. Endorsements help the companies to gain strength in the market in order to be part of the consumers purchase basket. By doing so, sunrise companies prosper and develop into bug giants. Celebrities have a growing interest of the consumer population hence that image and aura is used in relation to a brand to influence the purchase decisions of people all around. This mechanism allows for change in tastes and interests with regard to the celebrity endorsement. Aristotle once said, Any brand can get a celebrity that is easy; but getting a celebrity consistent with the right brand to the right degree at the right time for the right purpose and in the right way; that is not easy. Significance of the Study The usage of famous ambassadors or celebrities in the department of marketing intervention and communications is growing since the late 1970s and has exalted to a percentage of nearly 25% at the end of the 1990s. Some researches show a positive direct economic effect of these famous endorsements despite they are very expensive. It ought to be of greath worth to the companies to know what product/brand goes with which celebrity in light of the expected outcome. Celebrity endorsements amount to millions of dollars in investments and the investment has to be on the mark to produce fruitful results. However to ensure soundness of the investment, appropriate time and money is alloted to the marketing department to match the product with the celebrity keeping in view the popularity ranking of the celebrity in question with forecasted predictions of his/her future public stance. This research measures the Impact of celebrity endorsers attributes on consumer purchase intention to keep a chec k on the consumers behavior patterns in relation to the associated celebrity endorsement. However, Although, marketing strategies if well directed could improve the message getting across thus creating a suitable link between the brand and the celebrity. In light of this, the planning process of the message and the brand equity management should cater to the celebrity appropriately. The research itself would focus on Lowe Raufs client, Nestle and how celebrity endorsements affect consumer purchase behavior and brand equity for milk. The milk industry in Pakistan is an ever growing industry with multiple competitors and multiple ad agencies vying to create effective communication channels for these brands. Milkpak for the first time in Pakistan is not the market leader and as such the use of celebrity endorsement is an effective way of readdressing that balance. Time Frame The time frame for this research project is 5 months, starting from August and ending in December. This new independent company was called R-Lintas and was headed by Mr. Rauf who saw it grow and morph into one of the key players in Pakistans advertising industry. In the mid 90s, R-Lintas opened its doors to the Lahore market as well and has been thriving ever since in the city, creating many memorable campagins for some of the largest players in the industry, including but not limited to: Lux, Dalda, Nestle, Unilever Foods, Unilever Non Foods. In 2003, R-Lintas was taken over by Lowe and Partners International and was changed to Lowe Rauf Pakistan ever since with a new philosophy that focuses on fusing local ideas into everyday products that is known in its offices as, Populist Creativity. The Karachi office has eight different departments which include: Account Service, Account Planning, Creative, Finance, Media Buying, Production, Human Resource and Research. The Lahore office shares these resources for some functions, while running independently for others and thus it has smaller set of departments. It has a separate, Account Service, Creative, Media Buying and Production department, while the rest are shared with the Karachi office. Organizational Chart [Source: Lowe Rauf, Pakistan (2012). Organizational Structure, People Procedures Manual, pp. 3] Functional Departments Account Service Department: This department acts as a liaison between the agency and the client. It is responsible for maintaining the client portfolio along with working with the creative department and the client to ensure that information flows smoothly and to maintain a good working relationship with the client so that future work can also be brought in. The account services department, typically the account executive works to create a creative brief, which forms as the basis upon which the creative department comes up with ideas. Account Planning Department: The role of the account planning department is fundamentally to formulate a strategy that will drive all campaign objectives forward in a manner that is consistent with the agencys goals as well as the clients needs and the consumer perception of the brand in question. It is thus the most important department in the agency. Account planners frequently work with the research department because it is based on the information provided by the research team that they form their strategy and plans. Creative Department: The creative department is responsible for coming up with ideas for all campaigns. They use the creative brief provided by the account service department and use that to create print and TVC advertisements. The concepts created by this department are related back to the account service department which shows them to the client for approval. Often creative need to come up with multiple concepts because clients can be finicky and choosy. Media Production Department: The media production department is responsible for producing the TVC or print idea that the creative department has come up with. Once the final idea for the advertisement has been approved by the client, this department works with the creative department to create the advertisement so that a final form can be aired on television or published in newspapers, magazines etc. Media Buying Department: The media buyers use their sources and contacts to purchase advertising space wherever required at the cheapest rate possible. It is thus important to have a very low turnover rate within this department as one of the major ways through which lower rates are gained are through the media buyers contacts. These people also need to be aware of costs with regards to different locations, timings special occasions so that they can act upon it quickly, before the competition. Human Resource Department: The Human Resource Department, like any HR dept. at any organization is responsible for the planning and managing of personnel within the organization. This department mostly uses internet and websites to satisfy personnel needs, however sometimes newspaper advertisements might also be used. Market Research Department: The market research department is constantly in contact with consumers of different clients to understand how, when and why are consumer perceptions changing with regards to new campaigns and changes to brand. They also track brand health and measure equity if the client desires. Finance Department: Like with any other organization, the finance department controls all costs and cash associated with the firm at all levels. Financial Statements, People, Procedures Manual, pp. 19] Chapter III: Industry Competitors Local Industry Pakistans media network has gained new benchmarks as compared to yesteryears. Once being an agriculturally dominated, Pakistan has developed in this aspect. Cable and television being accessible to wherever there is electricity and road side billboards being the hub of advertisement. Be it radio, television, billboards or internet, advertisement market of Pakistan has expanded its outreach whereby it is now creating alliance with celebrities from overseas and setting aside endorsements as per the requirement of the current times. This opportunity of hiring non- Pakistani celebrities for brand image reaches new popularity levels that were previously held by Pakistani entertainers. Pakistan is increasingly following in the footsteps of the Western world by adopting a celebrity driven culture; where latest trends, fashions and ideas are modeled after various celebrities. History is witness to the fact that investments in celebrity endorsements in Pakistan have increased rapidly in the l ast decade or so hence increasing the quality of competition as well promoting innovation in marketing strategies as well as product development. This chain of events have allowed Pakistan to grow in the positive direction hence creating awareness and increasing knowledge of the general public by means of massive advertisement projects in relation to gaining total strength of the consumer population. Huge investments require similar increases in revenue. Brand image once embossed within the consumers then the companies get their safe haven until they reap the fruit of their own mistakes. Thus companies are increasingly using celebrities to endorse their brands by either publicly using their product or appearing in advertisements for said products. The aim is to increase sales of the product by getting consumers to change their purchase behavior and buying more of the product (either by consuming it in greater quantity or buying more of the product). However celebrity endorsement does not automatically guarantee greater success, nor is the effectiveness same for every brand of a particular celebrity. Thus it becomes important for organizations to understand how celebrity endorsement affects their brand. The purpose of this thesis is to study the impact that celebrity endorsement has on a brand as well as the factors that determine the effectiveness of the endorsement for the brand in order to maintain successful brand recognition. Competitor Analysis The local Pakistani advertising industry is brimming with a multitude of advertising agencies and each day it seems a new one is opening up around the corner. However, most of the top agencies in Pakistan have been around for decades and have a stable client base with which they operate and conduct their business with. Orient McCann: McCann-Erickson is an affiliate of the Interpublic Group of Companies and is a multinational advertising agency with some of the largest and lucrative clients in the world. McCann Erickson combined with a local corporation, Orient in 1996 to form Orient McCann in Pakistan. It soon established itself as one of the best agencies in Pakistan and currently has the highest market share with major clients as Habib Bank, KFC and LOreal. Synergy Advertising: Synergy Advertising has made a name for itself in recent years by winning the award for the best print advertisements in Pakistan. It has also gained strides by roping in Moiblink as its client along with Engro Polymer and NBP. Synergy is the second largest advertising service in Pakistan today. JWT: JWT, another international company with significant backing has been in the industry for over 20 years and has some of the most loyal client base in the industry. JWT prides itself on providing discounts and other deals to its clients, which are unmatched in the industry. Its major clients include Bank Alfalah and Asiatic Bank. Interflow: Interflow was established in Pakistan in 1979 and was initially slow to get off the ground. However over the last 10 years it has consistently performed well and with international clients such as Samsung and LG, it continues to build its reputation in the market. Manhattan International: Manhattan International is one of the few advertising agencies, certainly the only recognizable agency in Pakistan that is actively affiliated with its international office. Most other agencies, including Lowe Rauf are independent organizations with the same set of rules and principles; however Manhattans strongest point is that it can take the help of its international counterparts for campaigns and that is why they are strong in Pakistan, even though they have been here for a very short duration. Their biggest client at the moment is PIA. Pak Media Com: Pak Media Coms claim to fame has been one intensely popular campaign that has made them famous on the circuit. That campaign is the recent Ufone advertisements which have taken the industry by storm. Deemed to be the most recognizable and most appreciated advertisements amongst teenagers and young adults, these advertisements have put Pak Media Com on the map. Midas: Midas has started relatively recently in Pakistan and has been able to get the Indus Motor Company as their clients, along with a recent contract with Samsung post 2012, once their partnership with Interflow expires. This has made them a prominent player in Pakistans increasingly competitive advertising landscape. Evernew Entertainment: Evernew Entertainment has been around for over 20 years but has slowly seen a decline in its client base with the emergence of new players in the industry. It still has a few significant clients, such as Dawlance, which make them a worthy competition even now. Mindshare Pakistan: Just like Evernew, Mindshare has also been in operation for a long time but has a dwindling client base, however with Nokia still in their portfolio, they are deemed significant enough by the other agencies. Argus Advertising: Argus Advertising is not a large firm (as compared to the others on this list) but they have a very large, very profitable client in Sony. Although their client base is limited, the presence of Sony in their portfolio has been the envy of many Pakistani advertising agencies. Competitor Form Sheet [Source: Lowe Rauf, Pakistan (2012). Hence there are innumerable studies that have dedicated themselves to understanding the factors that lead to an increase in marketing effectiveness and leading to the ultimate aim of greater purchases and greater brand equity. Celebrity endorsement is one such factor that impacts purchase behavior and as such there have been studies that have been dedicated to not only studying the impact of this variable but also how it can be utilized to increase marketing effectiveness as well as the precautions that must be taken into account. The following reviews consist of studies relevant to this study. Celebrity Endorsement Hidden Factors to Success T

Using Technology in Sports :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Using Technology in Sports The ball comes speeding over the net and slams down onto the face of the court landing just beyond the base line, the line running along the back of the court. I had called her winning point... "out." As I turned towards her, I could see the anger building in her eyes. We walked towards each other, and with only the net separating us, she began to confront me. She argued that, as she saw it, the ball was obviously in and that we should replay the point. I wanted this game as much as she did and we were both standing strong. I finally decided that there was no use in fighting. We had to resolve this argument between ourselves because there were no line judges to decide for us. We decided to replay the point and she won. I tried to convince myself that there would be times when a call would be questionable and that I should try not to point fingers. I still went home discouraged that night because I knew that the call I had made was fair. The next day I sleepily drifted in and out of my Ethics lecture, although, the teacher was able to catch my attention by an interesting question that he presented. What is morally correct? This got my mind going. I was bothered by the match the previous day and I began to question myself about my call. Was it morally correct or was I being partial to my own success? I reflected on that final call that I had made, the point that won the game. I was positive that I had made a fair call but a little hint of doubt kept ringing in my head. What if I had made a bad call? What if I saw the ball differently than everyone else? Questions like these continued to haunt me throughout the hour. One of my close friends, Sarah, noticed that something was bothering me. She asked me what was wrong, and I told her that I was upset about last night's match and was wishing that there was a way to tell for sure if the ball had been in or out. As soon as I had finished, an excited look washed over her fac e. Being a track star, she proceeded to tell me about a new technology that was being used for runners.
